In early 2011, the CPP began a species-selection process to identify species for monitoring in each of California's NPS units. To ensure that the species targeted for monitoring would represent a diversity of habitats and growing conditions, the species-selection process was carried out in four biogeographic regions (Northern Coast, Southern Coast, Mountains, and Desert); a document summarizing the steps taken by the CPP to select focal species in each of these regions can be found on the resources page.  The CPP species-selection process resulted in the identification of recommended target species in a total of 19 NPS units in California. All of these species have species profiles available on the National Phenology Network website (search by scientific or common name here: http://www.usanpn.org/species_search).
